Overview

Caritas Technical Secondary School is making a positive impact on the lives of young women in Papua New Guinea. By providing a second chance to those who may not have had access to education otherwise, the school is not only helping to create productive citizens but also promoting equality and empowering women.

The School has a diverse range of technical skills on offer, including office and business administration, ICT, hospitality, housekeeping, textiles, etc. This means that students are able to acquire skills that are in demand in the job market and increase their chances of securing employment after completing their studies.

Over the past fifteen years, the Secondary School have succeeded in getting 10% of the students into universities (University of PNG, Divine World University and University of Goroka). The fact that 10% of the students have been able to continue their studies at university is a testament to the quality of education provided by the school. A further 50% of students get into other tertiary institutions such as Teachers & Nursing Colleges, or Technical Colleges such as LaeTech, POMTech, Don Bosco Technological Institute. The remaining 40% of girls go into direct employment. It's great to see that the school is not only focused on providing technical education but also on preparing students for tertiary education, which can open up even more opportunities for them.

Overall, Caritas Technical Secondary School is making a significant contribution to the education and empowerment of young women in Papua New Guinea. The dedication of everyone at school is also commendable, as they play a critical role in helping to shape the future of their students.

Curriculum

Academic curriculum

Following Papaua New Guinea National Educational policy, Standard Based Curriculum(SBC), Technical Secondary School offers both academic and technical curriculum: the students achieve Lower (Grade 10) & Higher (Grade 12) Secondary School Certificates.

We offer Mathematics, Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), Language arts (English or the official language of the country), Social studies (History, Geography, Economics), Physical Education and Health Technology and Computer Science as well as elective courses (various other TVET subjects)

CTSS also offeres Pre-Grade 11 courses to upgrade marks and obtain basic technical knowledge that is required for students to progress. The course is offered to those who have only succeeded in achieving Grade 10 and those who are not yet eligible for Grade 11.

Technical Curriculum

We offer Caritas students in Papua New Guinea for the opportunity to acquire National Certificate 1 and 2 in Tourism & Hospitality and Office Administration through the Technical & Vocational Education & Training (TVET) program. These certificates provide recognition of the students' skills and competencies in these specific areas.

The TVET curriculum at Caritas, as a Technical Secondary School, is designed to prepare young women for future employment or enable them to start their own small businesses, benefiting themselves, their families, and the country as a whole. The school offers two packages of TVET courses to Grade 11 and 12 students: Hospitality Management (Commercial Cookery) - National Certificate I (NCI), Hospitality Management (Operations) - National Certificate II (NCII), and Business Administration - National Certificate I & II.

These packages typically include practical on-the-job training (OJT) components, which allow students to gain real-world experience and apply their knowledge in a professional setting. For Business Administration, the OJT duration is usually 160 hours, while Hospitality Management requires 480 hours. Upon completion of these packages, students receive not only Technical Certificates from the school but also National Certificates, further validating their skills and enhancing their employment prospects.

By providing relevant technical and vocational training, Caritas and the TVET program contribute to building a skilled workforce, fostering economic growth, and empowering young women in Papua New Guinea. These certificates can serve as valuable credentials in the job market and open doors to various opportunities in the tourism, hospitality, and office administration sectors.

Special Internal Curriculum

Welcome to CTSS, where we offer specialized Pre 11 courses designed to empower students by enhancing their academic performance, boosting their marks, and fostering fundamental technical knowledge.

The PRE 11 program caters specifically to grade 10 students from other schools and CTSS students who are not eligible for Grade 11. Admission to this unique program at CTSS is based on Academic, Technical, and Behavioural Assessments. It's important to note that successful completion of PRE 11 at CTSS does not automatically guarantee enrolment in Grade 11 at other schools.

At CTSS, we strive to support students throughout their educational journey. Our Pre 11 courses are tailored to equip them with essential skills and knowledge for future success. Join us as we pave the way for a bright and promising future.

Extracurricular Activities

In addition to these subjects, secondary school students may also have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities such as sports teams, clubs, and community service projects. The extracurricular activities are designed to help students develop a well-rounded education and acquire the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in college and in their future careers.
